Here is a photo of one of the "regulars" at the marina, enjoying breakfast at the bait bin:
We passed by Goat Island....so named because of a couple who lived there completely off the land for 30 years in the early 1900's. They raised goats, so the locals called it Goat Island. Now it is almost completely residential and vacation homes.
The channel was a little shallow prior to the Ben Sawyer Bridge, so we navigated very slowly through there and reached the bridge at 9:15 am. I took a photo as it was opening for us:
Our first glimpse of Charleston as we exited the channel at Isle of Palms:
To reach The Harborage at Ashley Marina, we had to go under the lowest fixed bridge so far on the trip. The bridge height is 56' at mean high water. Our mast height, plus VHS antennae is 56'. We were about 2 hours past low tide, but we were still okay. We had about 1 1/2' to spare! Greg held his breath and waited for the sickening sound of our mast hitting the bridge, while I took photos:
Here is a look of our surroundings for the next few days:
After settling in, baking cookies, and doing a little housecleaning, while Greg made a trip to West Marine, we took the pups for a long walk halfway across Charleston and back. We got back just before sunset. Another great day!
Love Charleston parks and old Live Oak Trees!!!
