Isle of Palms, SC

We did not have a good internet connection last night, so here is yesterday's post:

We left Georgetown, SC at 7:45am knowing we would have a long, full day to get to Charleston, SC, about 65 miles.  However, we did not quite make it all the way to Charleston.  Instead we had to stop at Isle of Palms, SC, arriving at 4:00 pm.  We traveled 55 miles.  We could not make the Ben Sawyer Bridge by 4:00 pm….they won’t open the bridge between 4-6 pm because of rush hour.  So we will not be in Charleston till early tomorrow.

Today’s run was good but a little stressful.  There were several spots where shoals were unmarked.  However, last night I found a chart on the web that showed current trouble spots on the ICW.  With that information, we were aware of them and managed to navigate through them safely.

We came across the first cable ferry crossing of the trip.  It was on the Esterville Minim Creek Canal.  It has just crossed when we came up to it so we didn’t have to wait.  Here are a couple of photos, one of each bank, as we went by:

While we are always seeing fishermen, both sport and commercial, today we saw a lot of duck hunters.  The areas we went through were marshland with tall grasses stretching out for miles.  I had to take a photo of this skiff going by…their camouflage would certainly fool any duck!

We finally saw the sun today.  It’s been so long I can’t remember exactly when we last saw it!  And I was right….the area is so much more beautiful with the sun out.  Here’s photos to prove it:

Since we couldn’t make the bridge by 4:00pm we managed to snag dock space at Isle of Palms Marina.  Here we are approaching the marina, and here are also a couple of photos of our surroundings for the evening:

We received our first visitor this afternoon…..Todd Frizzelle.  Todd is the son of long-time friends Marcia and Murray Frizzelle and we have known him all his life, but it’s been a long time since we have seen him.  He lives just outside Charleston with his wife and two daughters.  Even though he and his family are heading out of town tomorrow for Thanksgiving, he made the time to visit with us.  Very nice.  Here’s Todd and Greg:
